Our beloved 6-year old French Bulldog Leroy had no symptoms of illness when he experienced three seizures one morning in May. I rushed him to All Pets Animal Hospital in Encinitas, Calif., and after that visit, a referral appointment with a veterinary neurologist n San Diego. An exam and MRI later, we received the devastating diagnosis; An inoperable brain tumor caused Leroy's seizures. Without treatment, our affectionate Frenchie would not see the holidays.
We consulted a radiologist, who reviewed Leroy's treatment options. Desperate to make the right decision, my husband and I sought a second opinion at California Veterinary Specialists Angel Care Cancer Center in Carlsbad, Cali. We were determined to fight the cancer, assuming Leroy could enjoy a good quality of life. Our options included standard radiation, which lasts 16-19 days and requires full anesthesia each day, or CyberKnife - a cutting-edge robotic radiosurgery - which also requires full anesthesia but only takes three days. The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) and California Veterinary Specialists are teaming up for the 7th annual public service event providing free screening eye exams to Service Animals throughout the month of May 2014. Eligible service animals are invited to receive a free eye exam from our board certified ophthalmologist. Repeat clients from past events are welcome to participate.
